The Scott Volumeter is described in USP Method II and is designed for measuring the bulk density of fine powders. Bulk density may be described as the density of the powder ‘as poured’ into a measuring vessel. It includes the powder volume, inter-particle void volume and pore volume.
The Bulk and Tapped Densities of the powder are compared to give an indication of the type of interaction present between the various particles making up the powder mass and hence provide an index of powder flowability.

Scott Volumeter Bulk Density Tester
The Bulk and Tapped Densities of the powder are compared to give an indication of the type of interaction present between the various particles making up the powder mass and hence provide an index of powder flowability.
- Supports USP Method II
- 18 mesh screen (10 mesh optional)
- Calculation of Compressibility Index, and Hausner Ratio
Scott Volumeter - Bulk Density Tester
The Scott Volumeter can be used for Bulk Density testing of fine powders and complies to both USP 616 and Ph. Eur. 2.9.34. It comprises of a funnel with 18 mesh screen, or optionally a 10 mesh screen, baffle box with 4 inclined glass plates and a 25.0 ml receiving cup.
The powder flows through the mesh, slides and bounces across the glass plates before being collected in the receiving cup. The cup is weighed before and after the analysis to determine the bulk density.
Comparing the bulk and tapped density of powders would provide information on powder flowability (Hausner Ratio) and compressibility.
The JV210i is a two-station tap density tester that supports USP Method II. It measures the tapped density of powders, granules, pellets, flakes and other bulk substances. The JV210i is particularly useful in powder flowability studies as well as determining the amount of settlement during transit to optimise pack sizes.
Alternatively, the JV100i is a single cylinder version with the same features as the JV210i. An acoustic cabinet is also available to reduce the noise level to 58 dB.
JV210i Tapped Density Tester
- Supports USP Method II and Ph.Eur. 2.9.15
- Two cylinder holders will hold 250 ml cylinders (100ml optional)
- Calculation of Tapped Density (g/ml), Compressibility Index, and Hausner Ratio
