Determination of Crude Fat Crude fat is the term used to refer to the crude mixture of fat-soluble material present in a sample. Crude fat is the traditional measure of fat in food products. The lipid materials may include triglycerides, diglycerides, monoglycerides, phospholipids, steroids, free fatty acids, fat soluble vitamins, carotene pigments, chlorophylls, etc.
The common approach for total crude fat determination is based on the solubility of lipids in non-polar organic solvents such as hexanes, petroleum ether, or supercritical liquid carbon dioxide with or without a solvent modifier. The AOCS Official Method Am 5-04 determines the substances extracted by petroleum ether under conditions of the test. This method is applicable to extractions of oilseeds, meats, feeds, and foods.
ANKOM Technology is the developer of Filter Bag Technology (FBT). FBT provides a state-of- the-art alternative to Soxhlet- and Soxtec-type extraction methods for fat analysis and fiber analysis.
Unlike conventional Soxhlet extraction, FBT allows for batch extraction and precise control. FBT also provides a higher level of automation compared to conventional Soxhlet and Soxtec-type methods for fat analysis and fiber analysis.
With the use of Filter Bags, productivity soars as samples are batch processed in an automated or semi-automated system. The number of samples per day your laboratory can process per day will dramatically increase. In addition, samples are completely encapsulated which ensures ease of handling and virtually eliminates error and increases precision. Operator exposure to chemicals is reduced or eliminated, thereby increasing lab safety.
At the heart of Filter Bag Technology (FBT) is the F57 filter bags which are specifically designed to provide accurate and precise results. A 3D-filtration matrix is specially designed to ensure maximum solvent/solution flow without allowing fine particle loss. The F57 filter bags are Nitrogen and ash free and are capable of withstanding 72% Sulfuric Acid. The porosity of the F57 filter bag is 25 microns.
The ANKOM XT15 Extractor advances and simplifies the conventional Soxhlet operation. It accelerates the process by performing the extraction under pressure at elevated temperatures. Capable of determining fats from 0% to 100%, the ANKOM XT15 Extractor allows extraction of up to 15 samples at a time and is capable of a total throughput of more than 150 samples per day. Solvent recovery and recycling is done automatically at a rate of 97% or greater.
*If using solvents such as diethyl ether please ask about seal upgrades
The ANKOM XT10 Extractor is a lower cost semi-automated system with many of the features of the ANKOMXT15 Extractor at a lower cost. The ANKOMXT10 Extractor also accelerates the process by performing the extraction under pressure at elevated temperatures. It is capable of up to 15 extractions at a time and and is capable of a total throughput of more than 100 samples per day. Solvent recovery is done automatically at a rate of around 90%.
*If using solvents such as diethyl ether please ask about seal upgrades.
The ANKOM HCl Hydrolysis System provides an easy method for perform the hydrolysis in total fat/oil analysis. It allows for batch hydrolysis of up to 15 samples at a time. Using Filter Bag Technology, total fat/oil hydrolysis is simplified. The technician inserts up to fifteen samples into the Teflon vessel, adds the acid solution and follows the system screen prompts. Once the program is selected, the system automatically completes the process and rinses the samples.
